Aphrodite Companions Busted

Busted
Aphrodite Companions was busted the other day. The husband and wife team who ran that NY/FLA escort agency are being held without bail on prostitution and money laundering charges. Agencies get busted all the time, which is why I write all the time about why you shouldn’t work for one as an escort and why its dangerous to use one as a client. Agencies have a habit of being busted because since they are illegal business they tend to bend the legal business rules  yanno like  paying their taxes and trying to hide their income. They look good to prosecutors who if they were going to bust an independent girl would only get a misdemeanor prostitution charge, those prosecutors who in a situation with an agency can all it an “International prostitution ring” bust people on promoting prostitution, pandering, money laundering, tax evasion and so much more. They stack up those charges
What makes this bust more interesting is they didn’t set up a meet with a client or escort and flip them or bust them. According  to court papers recently unsealed done all “digitally”. They’ve got emails and they are also going to try to use TER reviews to help take this agency down. Yes, escort reviews. Yanno the things anyone can write and where any anonymous person can say anything about any one. It will be a long haul for the state to prove anything with reviews ( hearsay conjecture made up i made her cum 5 times penthouse story letters) but they will try. Who knows whats in the emails, I’m guessing the agency owners said shit they should have. Got lazy or careless. It was a year-long investigation and to my mind the worst thing that came out of it wasn’t that these questionable people got busted (they have a long dramatic history fighting with other agencies and not exactly a good rep dealing with the workers who worked with them) but that a TER moderator was reveled to have traded good reviews for free sex of the girls who worked for them. Is that anything new? No mods try that shit all the time and are accused of it all the time though usually it’s not released in court documents for all to read what a low life asshat a TER mod can be. This one according to the state of NY also wrote bad reviews about Aphrodite Companions competitors. What a dirt bag. I hope he gets a subpoena and has to testify in court about what he did and it ruins his fucking life.
This kind of game playing with people’s lives is one of the reasons people hate to be reviewed or why they shy away from the whole review thing. Assholes like this and agencies like this that try to manipulate the situation so they can get laid for free or because making a huge amount of money off the backs of hard working sex workers just isn’t enough for them they want or need more money, a bigger house, a bigger TV whatever the fuck it is. Greed and deceit are rampant.
Fuck all those people for being so damn shady. Fuck the agency for being stupid and greedy,  fuck the TER mod for being a dirt bag, fuck TER for allowing this tool to work on their site. They are culpable as well. I have a feeling these idiots will either plead out and do a few years or the whole thing will fail as it seems on pretty shaky ground if they are trying to use reviews as evidence. Or maybe this TER mod is working with the state of NY to further this bust… wouldn’t surprise me and would be the first time a TER mod flipped and worked with the police. That site is toxic.

P411 Infiltrated

Screening services are designed to keep escorts safe from arrest. They in theory are places legitimate escorts register to be able to hook up with legitimate potential clients. Legitimate in this case when referring to clients means not the cops. A screening service will screen a potential by often doing a work verification. Making sure that whoever, is really Joe the plumber and not Jack the cop. I’m not sure how they do their client screens but I know how I do them and its pretty extensive. There are many ways to verify someones employment. Visa does it all the time and I personally employ some of Visa’s methods. No I wont tell you what they are. You have to be on your game. The smarter the cops get the more you have to vary your methods.

Well it seems as if a very popular screening service was infiltrated and a bunch of ladies got arrested. The screening services isn’t fully to blame but they need to take the brunt of it. It seems a handful of ladies met with this undercover and pronounced him legit when they didn’t fuck him for cash. They met him in a public place (for cash) had a nice little meet and greet then when on their way. They then OK’d him. Which is pretty careless to say the least but then again they thought he had been screened by the screening service. So lets just say everyone fucked up because they were lazy or greedy or just plain stupid. You pick.

Which brings me to my main point, you must screen for yourself. Do not trust anyone to do it for you. Yes screening services can help. Use them as a tool, don’t rely on them. Yes, Oks and references help but use them as one of the things you do to verify a client. For gods sake if someone Oks someone on a screening service follow up  with a polite email asking for a reference. Now I don’t know if that would have helped in this case and for all I know some of the 22 arrested did just that but you must be diligent and you must double and triple check and if anything seems funny, it is funny and run don’t walk away from that appointment. Do not outsource your safety and freedom to a screening service. Ever. Or you just might get caught up in something you could have avoided.

As if Colorado didn’t have enough to do dealing with wildfires clearly busting hookers is the best way they can come up with to spend public funds.

Don’t Be a Cunt

Rage against the reviewer
Reviews, reviews, reviews.. It’s all the rage to rage against reviews. Ok, I get it they are problematic but lets not forget that potential clients sometimes read them and use them when choosing an escort to see. We don’t have to like that but it is a fact. Lets also not forget that as much as we may not be comfortable with reviews raging on men who use them from the ultra obsessive reviewer to the casual reader just makes us look like the crazy ones. I’m serious and I know that seems strange coming from me. The chick who in the last decade went to war with review culture and put my money where my mouth was by putting my actual working name on it. However there’s a huge difference between shining a light on review culture, how it affects an escorts business and especially how it makes someone feel to be reviewed in a straight forth manor and being a raging cunt to every man who’s ever read a review and had the unmitigated nerve to say so.

Reviews are currently being hotly debate over on that collective sex worker blog that’s “One Big Service Piece”  people are raging and people are being thoughtful and many people adding their 2 cents to the conversation. I do see a theme though, if any man has an opinion or wants to participate in the conversation be he sending in a email in response to a call for entries or just simply posting a “Hey I never thought of it this way before” comment on a blog post he will get demeaned and belittled. Clearly there are sex workers who can not see beyond their own need to feel slighted, insulted or whatever their personal issue is (it feels and looks personal) to see that maybe, just maybe some client thoughts and perspectives might be insightful, useful or at the very least good to know.

Sex workers are only half of the equation …. sex workers need clients to yanno actually work and if you are such a raging cunt that you cant take a breath before you unleash your pent up anger and furry on some dude who’s just trying to be part of the conversation and may actually be agreeing with you. Well then maybe you need to go into actual therapy.  Men are not the enemy, clients are not the enemy. Yes, there is much change that could happen that would improve the lives of sex workers, but feeding into the stereotype that we are all just man hating cunts out to take their money and don’t really give a flying fuck about them, in my humble opinion not the best way to go about making any kind of change. Speak your mind, tell your truth but if your truth is all “fuck you, I hate you” then maybe you need a new line of work

Human Trafficking
The rescue industry is trying to change trafficking laws again, this time in CA. There’s a very well detailed blog about prop 35 in CA on the Orange Juice Blog  which I read and commented on a while back and even if you’re not living in CA you might want to take a read and see how this very flawed legislation breaks down. I was born behind the Orange Curtain and only last year moved out of CA after living there my whole life so I still am very interested in the state and its politics but you don’t have to live in CA to be concerned. Legislation like this could come to a city and town near you. I was reading the other day about what looked like to me based on the facts presented in the article to be a driver, someone who drives escorts to their appointments and makes sure they get home safe, out in in Takoma park  being arrested for “human trafficking”    A Months long investigation over several counties and jurisdictions resulted in an arrest for human trafficking.  In CA currently if a driver gets busted its a chauffeur without a license ticket. Trafficking is being applied in all kinds of ways  people never expected and legislation is being written so that the new laws could easily be stretched and manipulated to cover all kinds of things besides actual real honest to good human trafficking. Yanno when you force someone into labor situations against their will. That’s what trafficking is and it actually happens in non sexual labor far more often but that doesn’t get the all the splashy headlines that the rescue industry uses to get more funding. Oh and if you don’t believe the rescue industry is an actual industry take a walk down to DuPont Circle in Washington DC and stand outside the Polaris Project’s headquarters. That’s some damn expensive real estate an they have the whole building. Yes, your anti trafficking dollars at work keeping their executives in pretty nice digs.

Being over broad, over reaching, disguising what really amounts to anti prostitution attitudes, ideals,  legislation and eventually arrests doesn’t help REAL victims of trafficking. it doesn’t make it harder to manipulate and force people into trafficking situations, it doesn’t provide services for those who are trafficked and it doesn’t punish people who pray and inflict damage on to other people by actually trafficking them. I personally believe it diminishes the real suffering of trafficked people by calling everyone involved int he sex business in all kinds of capacities traffickers or trafficked. Its too often used as just another tool to punish consenting adults who work in the sex business by choice.  It seems in some parts of the good ole’ USA Transporting consenting willing adults to and from a business appointment is now human trafficking. The word transport and traffic are one and the same and this kind of thing is only going to happen more and more.

Please do read the Orange Juice blogs break down of Prop 35 in CA its worth the time to read: http://www.orangejuiceblog.com/2012/07/i-despise-human-trafficking-but-i-oppose-the-badly-drafted-prop-35/

Risky Behavior

Yes, there will be hookers but will there be ballons?
I’ve written about hooker meet and greets  before, I’m sure this wont be the last time I write about them but let me say this loud and clear… Escort meet and greets are not safe! As further proof how these functions have taken a dive in the safety arena (they took a dive in the class arena long ago)  is the latest from New York Magazine “Johns Night Out” Where a reporter gains access to an “exclusive” meet and greet he heard about on the largest hooker review website out there, you know the one that boasts a bizillion reviews of escorts. A public notice was posted about the upcoming event and it appears the reporter asked for an invite and got one.

If a reporter can gain access then so can law enforcement. Busting meet and greets is happening more often then ever before. Yes, there was a time when meet an greets were safer then they are today. I have been to them, hell I’ve even thrown a couple way back in the day but times have changed and people need to understand that the risk of attending a meet and greet has increased 10 fold. Escorting is a risky business, its not legal and these parties might have had a purpose once upon a time but now reporters are going to them and writing about how that hooker was making out with a client/potential client (gross) and how hookers and johns excused themselves and left to go to locally bought hotel rooms to conduct business. That’s exactly how some people in the Midwest just got arrested after attending a meet and greet sponsored by a local Midwest board.

Is it really worth the risk?
This New York based meet and greet also cost money, according to the reporter 120 bucks a head with a count of about 75 men attending (ladies don’t pay at these events) Lets do the math, that comes to $9,000 but of course the host is only doing this out of some altruistic need to match make escorts and their potential clients not because he’s a hobbyist who’s once again trying very hard to get a piece of the financial action, no its out of the kindness of his heart.  He also seems to have no ability to screen potential guests as evidenced by the big, flashy, splashy article in New York Magazine. As escorts, screening is the very thin line that protects us from harm and arrest. Don’t give that task over to someone you don’t know, someone who doesn’t have the skills to keep you safe, someone who’s got motives other then safety. Don’t hand that very important safety element over to some hobbyist dude who is looking to make a buck off your attendance and likely is trying to up his profile with the other hobbyists in the virtual locker room that is hooker message boards. Meet and greets are not safe places to be. Yeah I know the old line thats thrown about over and over “they will generate more business” Yeah really? Will they generate enough business to overcome the cost of a lawyer if you are arrested? Will they generate enough income to overcome the stigma of having a permanent arrest record for prostitution? Are they worth the family problems you might encounter if your name is all over the Internet as a known prostitute? Will they generate enough income to make up for being splashed across the nations magazines or newspapers? Yes, this reporter only used user-names and did not publish pictures with his article, will the next reporter do the same? Would TMZ be so restrained? Hardly.

As escorts we take great care to minimize our risk in a very risky business. The writing is on the wall for escort meet and greets and its scrawled in thick bold black letters.
