(Grain of salt, I'm neither hobbyist nor provider:) It would seem the day of the M&G has passed with the internet now available to all. Whereas once the proliferation of swinging & escort mags in local adult _novelty_ (Because back in the day that's all they were. Cheap novelty shit. We have evolved...) shops, there is now the ability to reach a worldwide audience for next to nothing, as well as trade reviews, notify of travel with ease, and even chat with clients. As even the glory hole-filled video arcades have nearly been put to death in many places with the advent of cruising and hookup sites, so too has the usefulness of the M&G.

Sadly, the same tool used to extend the clientele of an escort has also increased the ease in which law enforcement can infiltrate and impersonate said clients. I think it goes without saying that now, more than ever, you have to be as absolutely careful as possible when working. Managing your anonymity, burner accounts, phones, locations, etc. Hopefully more and more sex workers will make use of the web to learn to protect themselves, not just advertise.

This curiosity grew as the wave of erudite sex-workers hit the blogosphere, right when I was about sixteen. There were many, but most memorable to me were Belle from Belle de Jour (now revealed as Brooke Magnanti) and Alexa from NY Hotties (sadly disappeared). I also read the Nancy Chan column on Salon.com (written by Tracy Quan). Prior to discovering these blogs I didn’t have any perceived notions of what escort work is like; I’d brushed off the sex trafficking shown in films as blown out of proportion, though I’m obviously aware now that those are very serious issues. I may have been naive, but I’m almost glad that I was. It gave me an open mind about this kind of work.

I have nothing to hide -- I believe the power of any activist comes from sharing their vulnerability and humanity. This is what will make injustice visible. If you pretend to be perfect it won't work. But I have used a pseudonym to protect my family -- for obvious reasons.

I'v never said all sex workers are pimps -- that would be calling myself a pimp. There's lots of talk about my 'lies' -- but this seems to be merely an excuse to out me, as no 'lies' are ever disproved. My parents live in a 3 bedroom house appraised at under 300K. They also have a small vacation home. When I was a kid they were solid middle class. When I was in my 30s they became upper middle class.

I appreciate the people who've spoken out about how wrong this 'outing' is. At the same time I feel protective -- I don't want anyone else to be targeted. This is creepy, invasive business. The point is coercive intimidation. You all be careful and protect your precious selves.

FWIW I never said I saw women in prostitution murdered before my eyes. McNeill said that in her blog -- I never did. There were many untruths posted in that terribly invasive blog post you refer to -- among them that I was in college in 1984/85 (false) and 1986/1987 (I tried to return but my pimps made it impossible and I was too traumatized and shamed to ask for hell -- I felt like I didn't deserve to be there anymore), or that I wasn't living in a dorm when I met my husband (Interestingly the invasive cyberstalker did manage to find a condo deeded in my name in 1992 without a mortgage, disproving the claims that I 'lied' about a John giving me a condo). Here's how it worked -- I put the condo on the market but it was just after the Kuwait war -- slow market -- took over a year to sell. A close friend gave me a loan without a lien and I promised to pay it back when the condo closed. When I did get the condo under contract the people buying it sued me to lower the price. I couldn't break the contract, and I could't sell it to anyone else -- that's NY law (baroque & different from a lot of stats). So I rented the condo to a banker and moved into campus housing. Had to get a mortgage against the condo because the lawsuit went on for years. My husband and I spent our wedding night in my dorm room. We actually back went and stayed in the dorm for our 6th anniversary, because we thought it was romantic. Eventually -- the buyer lost the lawsuit, had to pay my legal expenses, and the deal closed. No big mystery -- just a lot of assumptions that had been made on the part of Whiteacre and McNeill. You seem to have a beautiful, meaningful life with your hoses Jenny. I admire that.

Great read, appreciate your insights and honesty. I was reading a blog of former escort who is now doing online marketing for a company and was outed by another co-worker for whatever reason. In her situation she kept her job, mainly because she does good work but also because she was lucky enough to work for someone who is open minded.

To out someone, you are literally fucking with their livelihood. To out someone without all the facts and coming from another lady within the industry is just as fucked up and maybe a little more so. But in either case your playing with people's lives and that in itself is very dangerous.

Agreed with all your points, hopefully you'll get enough reads from women who need to take heed to your message.
